Glow

Every resident has a story

Updated October 8, 2026

Glow gives care homes a calm way to hear each resident's life, keep their real voice, and give every family visit something to talk about.

Key takeaways

  1. The problem Family visits in care homes go quiet while residents' life stories stay unrecorded.

  2. Core insight A structured conversation with photos and the resident's own voice gives visits a topic and families a real record.

  3. Practical outcome Start with a few residents at no cost and no commitment.

Every resident has stories that nobody has recorded: the childhood, the journey to a new country, the work, how they met their partner. Glow lets a care home hear them, one question at a time, and hand them to the family as something real.

The visits that go quiet

A daughter sits beside her father. She asks how he slept. They watch the television. She leaves after forty minutes, unsure whether it helped. Staff see this every afternoon.

The stories are there. Long-ago memories often stay when recent memory does not. What is missing is someone who asks the right question, and a place to keep the answer. Talking about the past with a person who has dementia works best with one photo and one gentle question.

What Glow gives a care home

  • A resident is heard. Someone listens without hurry and without judgment. The resident talks about their life, on a phone or tablet, alone or with a member of staff.

  • The voice is kept. The family keeps the real recording, not only the words. Glow never makes or imitates a voice.

  • The stories arrive in order. Glow transcribes the conversations and sorts them into chapters of a life.

  • Families join in. A relative gets a link, listens, adds photos and asks follow-up questions. A grandchild far away can take part.

  • Every visit has a topic. Families come with a story to ask about. Residents have something to look forward to.

  • No technology skill needed. A resident who does not use a phone can still take part. See how to record a life story when the person does not use technology.

How it works

  1. The resident talks. A guided conversation with Glow, at the resident's own pace, alone or with staff. One question or ten minutes is enough for one sitting.

  2. We open the accounts. The home does not carry the set-up work. Glow transcribes and arranges the stories into chapters.

  3. The family is invited. They get a link, listen, and add photos.

What the research supports

Looking back on a life is a normal task of old age, not a distraction. Robert Butler described this in 1963. Later trials of structured life review with older adults found that life satisfaction and well-being rose, and that friendly company alone did not give the same result. Reviews of many controlled studies find a moderate drop in depressive symptoms.

For people with dementia the evidence is more careful. A Cochrane review found a probable small benefit to quality of life in care homes, and no harm. It did not find a meaningful change in memory test scores. Read more on using photos and objects as the way in, and on why some people will not talk about the past, and what helps.

One sentence stays inside the evidence: a structured hour with their photos and their own voice is one of the better-studied ways to help an older person feel their life still holds together, and to leave the family something real. It is a visit and a record. It is not medicine, and Glow does not replace care.

Questions you might have

What does it cost to start?

Nothing. The free account includes up to two hours of recording for each resident. You can start with a few residents, meet the team, and decide later. There is no commitment, and you can move to a paid plan at any step.

Who owns the recordings?

The files belong to the resident and the family. They do not belong to the home or to Glow.

Does the resident need to use a phone or tablet?

No. A member of staff can sit with the resident. The device is only a microphone and a screen for photos.

Is this therapy?

No. It is a structured conversation with a record at the end. It does not diagnose or treat. Your care team stays in charge of care.

Can we start small?

Yes. Most homes begin with a small group of residents and decide afterwards.
