You didn't know there was a decision. And somewhere in the middle of her telling it - the exact way she pauses before the punchline, the particular word she uses that nobody your age would use - you feel it: this voice, this version of her, is not recorded anywhere.

You have a phone in your pocket. You have cloud storage and a dozen apps. What you don't have is a way to keep the thing that matters most - not her face, which you have in hundreds of photos, but the sound of how she tells a story.

Why her voice is different from everything else you've saved

A photo shows you what someone looked like. A transcript shows you what they said. A voice carries something neither can: the pause before she gets emotional, the laugh that comes out before the joke lands, the specific rhythm of how she thinks out loud. You already know this - it's why a voice note from a friend lands differently than a text, why you can recognise someone you love from two rooms away. Research on how memory works consistently shows that voices are among the most emotionally activating kinds of recall we have.

And it's why losing a voicemail stings in a way losing a photo doesn't. The voice is the person, in a way nothing else quite is.

We also know the worry underneath all of this: that getting out your phone will feel strange, like you're already treating her as a chapter that's closing. That she'll ask why you're recording and you won't know what to say. That worry is real, and it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.

Three things she can choose to do with her voice

Voice Keepsake is built around one idea: her voice, her rules. There are three choices, each opt-in, each entirely hers.

Keep my voice

Every conversation she has with Glow is already a real recording. Voice Keepsake gathers those stories into a lasting voice archive in the family's private family space - organised by story, not just date. Her laugh when she remembers something. The way she says your name. The song she hums when she's thinking. Her real voice, nothing added, nothing generated.

Messages for later

She records words now, to be heard later. "Open on your wedding day." "For when you finish the army." "For your first child." Her real voice, arriving at the moment she chose. Not a video to be found by accident, but something she placed deliberately, for someone she loves, at a moment she imagined.

Let my voice speak on - on her terms

Only if she chooses it, with her own recorded consent, Glow learns her voice from her stories so it can say new things in the years ahead. A bedtime story for a great-grandchild she never met. A letter she wrote, read aloud in her voice. Happy birthday on a birthday she won't be at. She sets the rules for what it may say and what it must never touch. This is not available by default, and it cannot be switched on by anyone else, at any time.

Her voice, her rules

• Only she can choose "Let my voice speak on", while she is alive, by her own recorded consent.

• No one can build a voice for someone who did not choose it - not from old recordings, not for someone who has passed.

• She chooses who may hear it, what it may be used for, and topics it must never touch.

• She can change her mind or switch it off at any time; afterwards the family can pause it.

• Real recordings are labelled real. Anything generated is clearly labelled as spoken by Glow in her voice. The two are never mixed.

• Never used for phone calls or to impersonate her. Her life story chapters only ever quote her real recorded words.

• Private to the family. Always.

How it starts

It starts with a conversation. Sit with her at the kitchen table, open Glow on your phone or tablet, and let her talk out loud with Glow. She doesn't need to read anything. She just talks, the way she always does, and Glow listens. That part - talking with Glow - is available today.

Later, when it feels right, you walk through the three choices together. She decides. Nothing happens until she does.
